Since 2019 the Apex Town Council has done some amazing things. To name a few:
- We passed one of the first Affordable Housing Plans in Wake County, which we’re well on our way to implementing
- Creation of GoApex Route 1, our bus service
- Created an annual greenway allocation, to help push forward small connections beyond the big ticket items we pass bonds for
- Speaking of big tickets items, 2023 saw Apex finally move forward with the Beaver Creek Greenway (Kelly Road to Nature Park) and Middle Creek Greenways
- A focus on Safe Routes to School: Apex created an objective scoring system for sidewalk projects, with a focus on routes used by kids walking to school
- Speaking of which: a 2021 Infrastructure bond both provided an influx of funds for sidewalk construction, but most importantly allowed the dormant Peakway Bridge project to move ahead once it became fully funded (will likely bid in late 2023)
- Passed a Downtown Plan
- Major Economic Development projects, including Cash Corporate Center and Apex Gateway
- Setup a stormwater utility to focus on stormwater runoff
- Most solar friendly policies in the state – now a SolSmart City
- Tree City
- Bee City
- Dark Sky Initiatives
In addition, I want to call attention to a few policies which I in particular had an outsized influence on, either as the primary sponsor or secondary sponsor:
- Push to integrate school capacity data (from WCPSS) into rezoning discussions, so this particular point can be data driven
- Historic Preservation focus, including pushing funding the Tunstall House restoration project and being an uncompromising partner for preserving Apex’s history at every opportunity
- Planning Board reforms, adding an Apex Historical Society member, adding stipends for service
- Establishment of a Rules Committee to work on a Rules of Procedure document of the Apex Town Council
- Pushing up the required RCA (resource conservation area) to max of 35%, the highest we could find in the state
- EV Charger ordinance; requiring EV chargers on all new parking lots
- High Density study. We initiated an area study to identify specific areas (near transit, highways, etc) which would be appropriate for high density. The land use map was updated to reflect that those areas, and those areas only, would allow apartment buildings giving clarity to residents and property owners.
- Predatory towing ordinance – I passed an anti-predatory towing ordinance limiting the distance and cost related to involuntary towing actions.
- Construction noise ordinance – I passed a construction noise ordinance which limited the hours construction (at least, the hours construction can make noise) to 7-7pm M-F, 9-7pm on Saturday, and not allowed on Sunday. Previously it was 6am to 10pm daily. This is an important insurance policy for quality of life for those impacted by Apex’s growth.
